Shay Patten-Walker was a committed trans activist who gave generously to the LGBTQ+ community. She was born on 7 March 1998 and studied at the University of Greenwich. Shay was a speaker and facilitator for queer rights organizations, human rights organizations, and companies such as the Generation Equality Forum and UK Black Pride, Among Other Initiatives.
Role in ‘Sex Education’
Shay worked as a gender consultant for the fourth season of Netflix’s ‘Sex Education series. Their advice and counsel on trans and non-binary representation radically shaped the arc of Cal, the character exploring the challenges of transitioning.
Advocacy and Impact
Outside of media, Shay was a youth worker, poet, public speaker, and activist. They advocated for change, using their voice to teach and uplift people around them.
Tragic Passing
Shay died by suicide in February 2022 at age 24. They were a wonderful and much-loved member of the trans and non-binary community, and their passing was a great loss. The fifth episode of ‘Sex Education’ season four was dedicated to Shay in memory of their contributions.
Legacy
Shay’s work continues to inspire and educate, shedding light on the experiences of trans and non-binary individuals. Their commitment to diversity and representation has always been a part of what they bring to the LGBTQ+ community.
