As of January 11, 2025, California is struggling with several major wildfires centered mostly in Los Angeles County. The most damaging are the Eatons Fire and the Palisades Fire. The fires have burned more than 36,000 acres combined, devastated more than 13,400 structures, and killed at least 11 people.
Palisades Fire
The Palisades Fire started in Pacific Palisades on January 7, 2025. Since then, it has spread quickly, driven by powerful Santa Ana winds, and has burned about 21,596 acres. Mandatory evacuations have been ordered, and many homes have been lost to the fire. Thousands of firefighters have been dispatched to the scene, but 65% of the cases are still uncontained.
Eaton Fire
The Eaton Fire also began in the Altadena area on January 7, 2025. It has scorched more than 14,117 acres and left at least six people dead. The fire has burned at least 972 structures and damaged 84 more. Evacuation orders hit residents in Altadena, Pasadena, and surrounding areas. Firefighting crews are struggling with difficult terrain and powerful winds.
Impact on Residents
The wildfires have driven close to 180,000 people from their homes, and many have lost their homes and belongings. For example, Walter and Yalda Seace could watch their Altadena home of 40 years burn down on their Ring camera. They are still planning to rebuild despite their loss.
Celebrity Reactions
The wildfires have also impacted several celebrities. Chris Pratt, an actor, said he was devastated to see the destruction in the fires. He stated that his family is safe, but devastation can be seen everywhere. He offered resources for those in need and expressed remorse to those who had lost everything.
Government Response
Governor Gavin Newsom has ordered an inquiry into problems with fire hydrant water pressure and the shutdown of a reservoir that have frustrated firefighting efforts. The deficit in water supply has already compounded the damage caused by the fires. The governor said answers were needed, as well as steps to ensure existing problems are addressed.
The Sunset Fire briefly threatened some residents in Hollywood, including the Hollywood Hills. But on January 10, Gov. Gavin Newsom wrote on X that the fire was 100 percent contained. According to reports, there were six fires this week, but five remain active in Los Angeles County. Fires still not fully contained are Lidia, Hurst, Kenneth, Palisades, and Eaton.
Current Challenges
Firefighters are battling strong Santa Ana winds, low humidity, and dry conditions that are driving the rapid spread of the fires. Infrastructure issues, like those related to the above-mentioned water supply, add to the complications. Despite ongoing containment efforts, conditions are challenging and continue to hamper progress at many fires.
Economic Impact
The wildfires are projected to be the most expensive in U.S. history. The insured losses are expected to be $20 billion or more, a new record. Some estimates suggest that the total economic loss could amount to as much as $57 billion.
