The Lister Learning and Teaching Centre is a symbol of modern education in Edinburgh. Located at 5 Roxburgh Place offers facilities with high-quality state-of-the-art amenities to students and faculty.
Combining History and Technology
The Centre is housed in the refurbished derelict former Lister and Pfizer buildings, which have been redeveloped with £10 million investment into new teaching spaces. In early 2018, this project delivered a student center housing 900 students for the University of Edinburgh.
Design and Accessibility
A six-story steel frame and aluminum curtain walling link building connects the refurbished structures. Accessibility is a vital part of the Centre, all floors are accessible via lifts and there are also accessible toilets when needed.
Facilities and Features
The Centre incorporates 25 tutorial rooms, a 120-seat lecture theatre, and two teaching studios. To ensure a flexible mode of teaching, they have integrated cutting-edge IT and AV infrastructure.
Sustainable Practices and Community Involvement
As part of the project and in line with sustainability objectives, the team successfully diverted around 97% of waste from landfills. It also created 15 apprenticeships, and got in touch with 60 college students as well promoting some sense of community.
Recognition and Awards
The Centre’s design gained recognition as it advanced to the finals in the Regeneration category at the Scottish Design Awards. The recognition emphasizes its compelling combination of historic rehabilitation and contemporary performance.
