In January 2024, new homeowners in Grand Junction, Colorado, uncovered human remains in a freezer abandoned by the previous owners. DNA testing confirmed the remains were those of Amanda Overstreet, who went missing in 2005 at age 16.
Shockingly, no missing person report was ever registered for Amanda.
Discovery of Amanda’s Remains
The home’s new owners listed the freezer for free on the internet. When someone other than the owner came to pick it up, they discovered a human head and hands inside. The Mesa County Sheriff’s Office identified the remains as Amanda, who disappeared in 2005 but was never reported missing.
The freezer was found inside a house that Amanda’s biological mother, Leanne Imer, and her deceased husband, Bradley Imer, once owned.
Timeline of Amanda’s Disappearance
Amanda lived with her grandmother, Nelda Overstreet, in Texas until Nelda died of cancer. Later, Amanda went to Colorado to live with her biological mother, Leanne, and her stepfather, Bradley Imer. According to family members, Leanne said Amanda had run away while on a trip to Texas but never filed a missing person report.
Mother’s Statement
Leanne has spoken out about the tragic fate of her daughter.
In a recent statement, Leanne said she was heartbroken by Amanda’s death. “I am heartbroken beyond words. Amanda was taken from us too soon,” she said.
Leanne said Amanda had moved in with her in Colorado after living with her grandmother in Texas.
She recalled the last day she saw her daughter and the last time she heard from her, saying, “Amanda was last seen in April 2005. We believed she had run away.”
Leanne said she never filed a missing person report, saying, “We thought she needed space and would return home on her own.’’
Not reporting her missing is a decision I will always regret,” she said.
Leanne also touched on the finding of Amanda’s remains in the freezer, saying, “I am as shocked as anyone about where they found her. I had no knowledge of this.”
In the statement, she stressed her willingness to cooperate with authorities, adding, “I am cooperating at every turn with the investigation on what happened to Amanda.”
Leanne ended her statement with a request for privacy, saying, “This is an incredibly difficult time for our family. We request privacy as we mourn and ask questions.”
Ongoing Investigation
Mesa County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating the circumstances of Amanda’s death. They are undertaking forensic tests and interviews to establish what occurred. At this point, they have not identified any suspects or persons of interest.
Authorities urge anyone with any information about this matter to come forward and help resolve this tragic case.
As the investigation continues, the community is left in shock over the tragic end of a young girl.
